Last night Savannah was determined to catch snakes in the back yard. She swears that she is going to pick them up by the tail and put them into a ziplock bag. So, armed with her freezer bag and shovel she went out and began digging. Unfortunately she did not find a snake, but she did find a cute little frog. Kate suggested the name Skiberty and it stuck.
After catching it and securing it in our butterfly net she slept with it in her room. Fearing that the frog would die, I explained to her that today we had to release him. Well, if you know Savannah you know that convincing her to do something she doesn't want to do (like getting her tooth pulled) can be impossible! So before long I found myself agreeing to go and buy crickets for her frog to eat!
I remembered that I had this frog habitat up in the attic from when I used to study the life cycle of a frog with my 3rd graders. So I fished the frog habitat down from the attic and while she was at school I bought a dozen crickets and conferred with the resident expert at the pet store. Apparently frogs can live quite a while in captivity and they only need a few crickets a couple times a week.
After picking up Savannah, we headed home and put three of the crickets which are now being housed in the butterfly net into the frog habitat with Skiberty. She was immediately desperate to feed it again so when I told her that we had to wait until he ate the first three she was off to watch TV. But as she usually does, she had something to tell me - "It's ok mom, I have two eyes, so I can watch the frog and the TV!" You better believe as soon as those crickets are gone, she'll be all over me like a bad rash...
