WARNING! While I make a genuine effort to be positive and see the bigger picture in most of my blogs, this one is just plain misery! I am sorry! I can't help it! I often look at other moms/people and think, "oh, they have it together, they are so "with it". If you have ever looked at me or my family and thought that, you won't after this post!!!
Because this past weekend was the very last before school started back up we decided to take one last mini-vacation and go camping at Jellystone KY! We were all excited to try camping again and we were thrilled that it was going to be warmer! Unfortunately for us it was forecasted to rain! ALL WEEKEND! But being busy and distracted with other stuff we didn't check the weather until we were in the car on the way there. We were hopeful because when we pulled in (after two hours of stand still traffic and a stop at Lowe's because we forgot the tarp!) it was dry and we thought we could check in and set up before the rain. But Owen had other ideas. He told Mike he had to go potty and so Mike took him over to a tree and he proceeded to pee on the tree and then poop on his pants and underwear! So we had just unrolled the tent when the downpour started....no going back! The tent was rolled out so our only choice was to get it up!
The plan was to get there about 4:30 or 5 and get set up and then cook dinner.....here the fire is finally going around 8 pm |
These girls aren't complaining though! |
Owen's not up for a photo op |
I really thought everything would be better in the morning! Until Owen creeped into our bed and took over my side! Needless to say I didn't sleep well and because KY has two different time zones, I was up at 5:30 am.
Kate stole Savannah's sleeping bag in the middle of the night so poor Vannie slept on the tarp with only one blanket! |
It rained on and off during the night and while our wonderful tent stayed dry, everything else in the park was wet....and it didn't take long for our feet and bums to be wet too! |
Our morning activity was to tour Mammoth Caves!
Savannah found a walking stick on the way to the caves |
I quickly realized that we didn't exactly dress the part. The cave tour included 160 steps and 55 degree temps underground. We were in shorts, tees, and flip flops! The ranger even took the time to point out that we were inappropriately shoed and we had better be very careful!
Totally embarrassing! |
Here we go! Turns out the shoes were no problem but the lack of jacket, pants, socks, or anything resembling real clothes was! Brrrrr..... |
After that we headed back to the Camp grounds for some fun in the cloudy/rainy weather! I promise you that the humidity was in the high 80's low 90's the entire weekend!
The pool and Water Slide were definite highlights! |
Owen did the waterslide all by himself! About 10 times! |
It wasn't super fast, but it was long! I was worried about him freaking out halfway through but he LOVED it! |
Next up, bouncy pillow! |
It was super bouncy and slippery! They didn't stay on their feet for long! :) |
So right about now, it starts to thunder and lightening so we have to high tail it back to our tent! About two hours later when the storm passed, we came out to play mini - golf.
Kate took her game very seriously - and won! |
Owen tried really hard but eventually began using the putter as an axe and chopped away at everything standing still! :) |
Pretty soon they opened the pools back up and we all headed over. Kate had changed into dry clothes so Mike watched Owen and Savannah while Kate and I walked back to the tent to get her suit. By the time we had gotten back and Kate barely jumped in the water Owen threw up in the pool and on the pool deck. Yes, once again, we are the freak show family! Mike apparently had been throwing him up in the air and splashing about so much that it made him sick! So they had to close the pool yet again to clean it! I was ready to crawl into a hole and never come back out! What is wrong with that kid? And his dad?
He did get to play in the splash pad area a little before he barfed! |
As I was determined to never show our faces again, we went back to the tent to make dinner. I brought canned ravioli but forgot the pot to cook it in. I also forgot the can opener for our canned corn. So we improvised....
Whatever....it worked! |
These two are the only two people in our family that didn't say, "I hate camping". Some of us said it more than others :) |
Keep in mind that this was only about 24 hours! Stay tuned for Day 2 which thankfully was go home day!
